Nothing To Fear But Fear Itself In Business
Written by Scott GustafsonWhen Franklin Roosevelt gave his inaugural speech in 1932 he stated that "We have nothing to fear, but fear itself." This statement has reverberated throughout the years because it holds true to everyday circumstances, including commerce. There is nothing to fear but fear itself in business as well.
When people decide to convert from paid employee to business owner they go through many changes: physical, mental, emotional and psychological. Fear can affect all these traits like a stone dropped in a pond, the ripple increasing as it expands. If you feel fear then your thoughts will become clouded and your body will respond in turn, usually with higher stress levels. There are four great fears that can overwhelm new business owners at any time; they are:
1. FEAR OF MONEY
Believe it or not, some people are afraid of money. They see ownership of money as a curse and justify their belief by saying they have enough to get by. Their aspirations for making money is so small that even if they did start a business they would spend more time making excuses as to why their business failed than building it. If this is your fear then you are being extremely selfish. There are others in the world who will always have less than you and they envy the opportunities that are available to you. You can help these people directly by donating money to their livelihood or indirectly by assisting other people who want to build a business and help those in need. Don't be afraid to make money or be in possession of it. If you need more influence read the book God Wants You To Be Rich by Paul Zane Pilzer.
2. FEAR OF FAILURE
This is the greatest fear of the four because it is the easiest fear to succumb to. Let me share a story with you. During the gold rush of 1849 there was a miner who was well known for finding gold for his investors. He was so good that he decided to mine for gold on his own with the skills he had developed and the money he had saved. He purchased a claim in Montana and began to prosper the land. The miner was able to find some small nuggets but not enough to pay for the workers he hired.
After he had let his workers go, he was all alone to work the mine by himself. He had sold his camping gear to buy food and at night he slept in the mine. Months had gone by now and to no avail he hadn't struck a consistent vein of gold he had hoped for.
Disappointed and defeated, the miner went into town the next day and sold the claim to the first buyer. The miner returned to the town where he once worked, looking for a job once more. He picked up a newspaper because he saw there had been a huge gold strike in Montana. Sure enough the miner who purchased his claim had found gold in the mine he had dug. What angered him the most was one statement in the article. The new owner had struck gold just one foot deeper from where he had stopped. Never give up because you never know when success might be twelve inches away.
3. FEAR OF DISAPPOINTING FAMILY MEMBERS
If you're married then your spouse bought into your relationship and if you fail them they feel let down, after all, and especially if you're the man in the marriage, you feel the need to be the bread winner, the provider. You can affirm your spouse that they made the right choice when they married you by telling them, "I'm going to be a person of power, a person of persuasion, a person of courage."
4. FEAR OF MONEY SPENT
There is always the fear that If I fail then my family will have to pay for my failures - even my children. Fear of spending just one dollar to build your business instead of putting it towards something else can prevent from achieving your goal of financial freedom. If you're afraid of losing your last dollar, you're not going to make an effort, to get off the path, that perpetual downward spiral you call life that has delivered you nowhere.
Fear can condition and train you to believe something that doesn't even exist. Everyone has the right to break free of those ideas. Every fear can be flipped so it benefits you and drives you to achieve more. By actually acting from a place of fear you can compound that fear or diminish it. It's better to approach things from a state of ego, not fear. Our deepest fear is that we feel inadequate in life and playing small in life reinforces that fear. We are all meant to shine, but playing small does not enlighten the world. You can either conquer your fear today, right now, or be a slave to it for the rest of your life.
